There was a lot of excitement surrounding New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart taking the field in the team's first preseason game with head coach John Harbaugh at the helm.
During the team's preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings, Dart completed three of four passes for 26 yards and a touchdown. He also took two sacks. So, it wasn't the best showing, but the absolute worst part wasn't the numbers.
Dart took a hit and had to exit the game briefly for a medical evaluation. That's concerning. It's not the first time, either. Dart, of course, is starting to build a reputation for not being able to stay out of the blue medical tent.
He ends up there too often because of his aggressive style of playing that just involves too much contact. Dart is strong, but a quarterback has to be smart and avoid too much contact. That doesn't seem to happen with Dart.
In a piece released on Monday, Moe Moton of Bleacher Report gives overreactions following the NFL's preseason debuts. For Dart, he says that the player is "still reckless."
"Dart can't avoid the blue medical tent, and it baffles him," Moton states.
He adds that during the game, "Dart has left himself open to excessive contact, so he'll draw criticism any time he takes a big hit." But at the same time, he didn't have much protection, and "the offensive linemen and running backs also have a job to protect him."
In this situation, running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. took responsibility for not doing his job, so this time, it wasn't really Dart's fault. But come September, Giants fans are going to want to make sure this sort of thing doesn't become a habit again.
