Cavaliers acquire Peyton Watson in multi-team trade with Nuggets, give him major contract

What had been an extremely quiet offseason for the Cleveland Cavaliers finally picked up on Wednesday night when they acquired Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets in a multi-team trade that also involved the Los Angeles Clippers and Washington Wizards.

The Cavaliers then reportedly signed Watson to a four-year, $88 million extension, securing him a massive payday.

As part of the trade, the Clippers are acquiring Max Strus from the Cavaliers, while the Nuggets are getting an unprotected 2031 first-round pick from Cleveland and a 2032 second-round pick from Los Angeles (which had originally belonged to the Sacramento Kings).

Cleveland is also reportedly getting Cam Whitmore from the Wizards, who will be getting Tre Mann and a draft pick as part of the deal.

Julian Reese is also going to the Nuggets, who will reportedly waive him.

Cavaliers acquire Peyton Watson and give him big pay day

Watson's addition is one of the first (and only) major additions by the Cavaliers this offseason after their failed pursuit to bring LeBron James back to Cleveland.

The 23-year-old Watson spent the first four years of his career with the Nuggets, steadily increasing his play and production every year. He is coming off a 2025-26 season that saw him record a career-high 14.6 games in 54 games, including 40 starts.

He is not quite a finished product as a player just yet, but still has enormous upside and has shown flashes of star-power in his early career. What really sets him apart is his defending where he has already shown a knack for being a shutdown defender due to his wingspan. If the offensive breakout is real, or even continues to get better, he has a chance to be a sensational two-way player and potentially become a core player for the Cavaliers.

In the short term, it is an obvious loss for a Nuggets team that has not really improved its roster at all this offseason. The driving force behind the move was almost certainly financial, as not having to pay Watson keeps them below the NBA's second apron.
