Vikings QB Carson Wentz makes case to be Kyler Murray's backup with impressive play vs. Ravens

A lot of the attention on the Minnesota Vikings this season has been on the quarterback battle between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy. But, there's another quarterback in the mix.

It's easy to forget that the Vikings also have Carson Wentz on their roster. He's a veteran who's also hungry for playing time, and it's not absurd to think that he could end up being the backup to Murray over McCarthy, even though it would be a bit unexpected.

Well, Wentz is out to prove his worth. He made a play during the second quarter of the Vikings' preseason matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday that was simply impressive.

Carson Wentz makes a statement with deep pass

In the heat of the second quarter of this matchup, Wentz connected with wide receiver Jeshaun Jones on an impressive deep pass. It was a real beauty to watch. Wentz threw the ball from Minnesota's 20-yard line, and Jones made a contested catch near the Baltimore 44 for a 36-yard gain.

With Ravens safety Keondre Jackson all over him, Jones climbed over the defender to come down with the difficult sideline reception. It was a big-time throw from Wentz and an equally impressive grab from Jones.

It's plays like these that show having veteran experience can be very useful. This is just the preseason. Nobody is getting trophies for their plays this time of year. It won't make a difference once the real games roll around. But, Wentz and Jones both sent messages to the powers that be that they need to be taken seriously and perhaps moved up the depth chart.
