The Detroit Lions already have their franchise quarterback. Jared Goff has more than earned his stripes as this franchise's steady signal-caller. Last season, he ranked second in the NFL in both passing yards and passing touchdowns. It doesn't get much better than that.
But, what about his backup quarterback? That's been a problem with the Lions' roster for years now. Goff has stayed remarkably healthy during his time in Detroit, but if he goes down, there's a real question about whether this team would have any chance to do well, even over the course of just a few games without Goff.
Well, the Lions' preseason game against the Washington Commanders didn't help the situation. It made it more complicated.
The Lions played backup quarterbacks Josh Dobbs and Luke Altmyer on Saturday. Dobbs is a veteran who's expected to be the primary backup to Goff, while Altmyer is a developmental quarterback. The latter wasn't selected in the NFL Draft this year, so after the draft, the Lions signed him as an undrafted free agent.
These two had totally different performances on Saturday in the Lions' 17-13 preseason win over Washington.
Dobbs had a rocky start, committing two costly turnovers. That's never a good look. But, he came back with a beautiful 50-yard touchdown run that showed off his power. The NFL even highlighted the play on social media.
Altmyer, meanwhile, provided a much steadier performance in the second half. He seemed calm, cool and collected. The rookie avoided mistakes, made smart decisions and helped the Lions stay in the lead.
So, Dobbs provided the bigger highlight reel, but Altmyer's calm and efficient play could give him an advantage as the Lions look at their options. It would be a stretch to see Altmyer as the direct backup to Goff, but stranger things have happened.
