Notable update emerges on the future of Yankees’ Brian Cashman

New York Yankees fans hoping for an end to the Brian Cashman era will once again be out of luck.

The longtime Yankees general manager Cashman is expected to receive a contract extension from the team this offseason, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported in a video feature this week. Heyman adds that Cashman is likely to get a “pretty big raise,” noting the respect that Yankees chairman Hal Steinbrenner has for Cashman.

Cashman, 59, has been the GM of the Yankees since 1998, presiding over four World Series titles. The Yankees also recently made it back to the World Series in 2024 but later lost to the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS last season.

That said, Cashman has been criticized for seemingly being overly passive on the trade market in recent years and preferring instead to make bargain additions, many of whom do not end up panning out. The Yankees have also been shredded by injuries to key stars like Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Cody Bellinger this season, putting the lack of depth on their roster on full display (though they still at a stellar 74-57 overall).

As it stands right now, Cashman is on an expiring contract. He signed a four-year extension with the team in Dec. 2022 that is set to run through the end of the 2026 MLB season.

Cashman does also deseve some credit for developing homegrown talents such as Cam Schlittler, Ben Rice, and (most recently) George Lombard Jr. into steady everyday contributors. But Cashman is taking heat from a lot of angles right now, so many Yankees fans might not necessarily be pleased about the news that Cashman is set to be extended (at a higher salary to boot).
