Latest update on Joey Porter Jr. raises questions about future with Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. are at a contract stalemate.

Notably, that situation isn't likely to change any time soon, mostly because the team doesn't want it to.

According to The Athletic's Mike DeFabo, the Steelers haven't even made Porter Jr. a formal offer for a contract extension, and the numbers they've floated aren't even close to what he's looking for.

While Porter Jr. might also have to adjust his aspirations, it doesn't look like the Steelers would miss him that much.

The Steelers don't consider Joey Porter Jr. a top-tier player

“From what I heard though, my understanding is they’ve not made him any kind of an offer that would really be reasonable that he would look at,” DeFabo said.

Porter Jr. reportedly wants to reset the cornerback market, which is something the Steelers aren't willing to do.

“I don’t even know if there’s officially an offer, but I’m sure they’ve exchanged numbers, and that number is really a low-ball number. So in some ways, it does seem like the Steelers, I don’t know if they view him as one of those top guys. And realistically, if Joey thinks he’s going to reset the market, I think that that is a pretty hefty ask, and I’m not sure I would do that if I’m the Steelers,” he continued.

So, whether it's via trade or letting him walk away in free agency, it seems that Mike McCarthy's team has made peace with the idea of not having him on the roster.

The former second-round pick is a rising star and a very talented player, but he hasn't earned his stripes yet to be the league's highest-paid cornerback.

Also, the Steelers can simply franchise-tag him in consecutive years if they want to keep him around with no long-term deal.

And with Devon Witherspoon just resetting the market at a whopping $32 million a year, it's hard to envision any other team feeling differently and giving him what the Steelers aren't willing to.
