Report: Brewers could trade 1 All-Star this offseason

The Milwaukee Brewers currently have the best record in baseball, but they could still be facing a reckoning come this winter.

Milwaukee catcher William Contreras is a name to keep an eye on this offseason, Robert Murray of FanSided reported this week on “The Baseball Insiders” podcast. Murray notes that Contreras could be a potential candidate for trade.

Contreras, 28, has been with the Brewers since the 2023 season and has quickly emerged as one of Major League Baseball’s elite catchers. He is now a three-time All-Star and a one-time Silver Slugger winner and is currently producing some impressive numbers in 2026.

The righty-hitting Contreras is batting .268 with 12 home runs and 65 RBIs as a bedrock piece for the 82-51 Brewers. Contreras is also known as a top-tier defensive catcher, particularly when it comes to both game management and throwing out would-be base stealers.

But Contreras will be entering his final year under contract next season (a club option at $14.5 million). That means that the time may be ripe for Milwaukee to sell high on Contreras before he gets too expensive.

The farm-rich Brewers also have 23-year-old catching prospect Jeferson Quero stashed away in Triple-A as a potential replacement-in-waiting for Contreras. While Contreras has had plenty of incredible cult-hero moments during his time in Milwaukee, the team may have a very tough decision to make on him this winter regardless.
