Trevor Story caps Red Sox's comeback with walk-off hit in win over Mariners

Story returned alongside outfielder Roman Anthony on Sunday. Despite the Red Sox (75-63) getting blown out in a 16-1 loss to the New York Yankees, Story was a positive, finishing 2-for-3 with a double. He had last played on May 14, when Boston was last in the AL East and had the league's third-worst record at 18-25.

At the time, Story had an awful .206/.244/.303 slash line with more strikeouts (57) than total bases (50). As MLB.com noted after his return against the Yankees, Story's rehab stint for the Triple-A WooSox inspired little confidence. He had a .171 batting average (6-of-35) with three RBI, suggesting his contributions at the plate would be minimal. Even the Mariners believed so, intentionally walking two batters to get to Story before Monday's walk-off.

Story has flipped the script with his promising return, getting swept up in Boston's stunning turnaround. In mid-June, the Red Sox's playoff odds on Baseball-Reference sat at 5.9 percent after falling to 29-43. But entering Thursday, they were a virtual lock for the postseason at 99.2 percent odds.

The Red Sox have been defined by incredible comebacks this season, both in individual games and their climb up the AL standings. But if Story's turnaround sticks, his might be the most remarkable.
