Chris Sale making NL Cy Young race intriguing with dominant second half

At 37 years old, Chris Sale is continuing to demonstrate how age is just a number, showing no signs of slowing down with his dominant second-half surge for the Atlanta Braves. While Milwaukee Brewers flamethrower Jacob Misiorowski has been the leading contender for the NL Cy Young Award, Sale has put up numbers that have made the race more compelling.

In Misiorowski's last start against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, he put up his worst start of the season, surrendering five runs early in the game. While the Brewers rallied to beat the Cubs 9-5, he picked up a no-decision in a tough outing.

If "The Miz" were to continue to struggle down the stretch, Sale would make an intriguing case for winning the NL Cy Young.

Sale owns the second-best ERA in the NL at 2.10 behind Misiorowski's 1.97 ERA and he delivered another gem against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday. The veteran picked up his 14th win on the season, tying the Miz, and tossed six innings giving up six hits, two earned runs, one walk and striking out seven in the Braves' 5-2 victory over the Phillies.

Chris Sale continues dominant second half

Sale has been among the NL's best starters since the All-Star break, strengthening his Cy Young case.

Sale's presence has also inevitably blossomed following his complete-game 1-0 shutout against the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 27. It was his first complete-game shutout since June 2019. He also recorded 11 punchouts and did not give up a walk, while also hitting 100 mph on his fastball for the first time since 2018.

While it won't be an easy task beating the young hard-throwing ace, if Sale continues to turn in more quality starts it will certainly place him in a good position for the Cy Young, ultimately making the race more competitive.
