North Carolina football rumors: Michael Lombardi investigation now includes Steve Belichick drug use, more

The investigation into North Carolina football has taken a new turn for the absolute worse.

On Thursday, the same day GM Michael Lombardi resigned, the probe was expanded to include defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, per Ari Meirov of WRAL News. Not only that, but it also looks into allegations of using drugs or providing drugs to a single player.

Furthermore, the investigation is looking into an alleged sexual relationship between a player and a member of the North Carolina recruiting staff. It is also looking into other relationships between assistant coaches and other staff personnel.

After his resignation, Lombardi explained his decision to step down.

“I want to thank Chancellor [Lee] Roberts and Bill Belichick for the opportunity to serve as the GM of UNC Football,” Lombardi said in a statement released through his lawyer. “I have decided it’s best for me to resign my position as GM to allow the team to focus on the ‘26 season.”

Later on, the University released its own response, saying in part:

“The University will continue its ongoing investigation and will consider all appropriate corrective actions responsive to the information it learns.”

Recently, the College Sports Commission investigated North Carolina for failing to comply with NIL rules. In July, a former front office employee filed an official complaint against Lombardi. Afterward, Lombardi was placed on paid administrative leave. Lombardi became the general manager the same year Bill Belichick became the head coach in 2024.

The Chicago-based law firm Barnes & Thornburg LLP is handling the investigation.
