Earlier in the year, the Seattle Seahawks took down the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX.
The game was never particularly close, with Mike Macdonald's defense smothering the young and inexperienced Drake Maye.
The Seahawks will bring back most of their championship-winning core, though Nick Emmanwori might not be available for the season opener. As for the Patriots, they now have an elite weapon in A.J. Brown.
With the start of the season just around the corner, Maye admitted that, as much as they want to focus on a new season, it's impossible to ignore the elephant in the room; it's a bit personal.
“You like to think it’s a new year,” Drake Maye said. “You’d like to think that, but at the same time, you go against an opponent you just lost the Super Bowl against. The last game I played that I was out there, we lost against, in the biggest game that’s why you play the game for.”
While Maye admitted that there's additional motivation to get the job done in Week 1, he also knows that nothing that happens there will change the fact that the Seahawks got the best of them when it mattered the most:
“It’s definitely, I wouldn’t say extra, just a little bit — It’s a chance to start the season off strong, on a good foot, and knowing that the opponent we have, you get to say a bit of your revenge game. But I wouldn’t say revenge game. They won the big one. We’ve got to start the season off and you can’t get that game back that we lost. So, we’re on to something new,” Maye added.
The Patriots will face a much more challenging schedule this season, giving them an opportunity to prove that last year's dominant run wasn't a fluke.
Maye fell just shy of winning MVP in his first full season as a starter.
So, as much as the Seahawks' defense may have already figured him out, this is probably the worst he'll ever be, and that should be a scary thought around the league.
