NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell signs contract extension, but does it provide him enough time to help renegotiate CBA with NFLPA?

Multiple reports shared on Sunday that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has signed a four-year contract extension. 

The new financial terms of the deal were undisclosed, but it will end on March 31, 2031. The league's collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association will end in March 2031, just as Goodell's deal expires. The timing will increase the sense of urgency to strike a new deal soon to avoid the league's first lockout since 2011.

According to Jonathan Jones and Jayna Bardahl of The Athletic, the league intends to agree to a new CBA before the next deadline. Goodell, who will be 72 in March 2031, won't want to renegotiate one at the last minute, especially if he's contemplating retirement before his deal expires.

The league is being proactive, but both parties may be far apart on several key issues, including whether to increase the regular season from 17 to 18 games. It went from 16 to 17 in 2021. 

Goodell has been pushing for an expanded schedule for years. Still, the NFLPA may not want to agree to it after a recent study found that at least 25 percent of dead NFL players from 2016-21 had CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). More games could put more players at risk of developing this condition. 

The NFLPA's recent upheaval could also delay negotiations. In March, NFLPA player representatives elected JC Tretter as the next executive director, even though he resigned from his role as chief strategy officer on July 20, 2025. Tretter's decision came three days after former director Lloyd Howell stepped down after several scandals came to light. 

In July, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported Tretter hasn't been engaging with the league on a new CBA since he assumed his new role. That's not a shock, given the timing.

The league seems confident it will sign a new deal when Tretter gets more settled. That said, it should have a backup plan in case it goes longer than expected. It doesn't want to be trying to agree to a new CBA while also seeking a new commissioner.
