Agent shares theory for why Patriots, Christian Gonzalez are in contract standoff

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network and ESPN is among the league insiders who are downright baffled that cornerback Christian Gonzalez and the New England Patriots hadn't yet finalized a contract extension (as of Friday afternoon) after the Seattle Seahawks signed cornerback Devon Witherspoon to a four-year, $132M deal in August. 

The two players are represented by the Win Sports Group, and Gonzalez is expected to become the league's new highest-paid cornerback. Nevertheless, what many assumed would be a relatively simple negotiation following Witherspoon's signing has dragged on into the start of the Labor Day holiday weekend. 

For a piece published on Friday, former agent and current CBS Sports NFL contracts and salary-cap expert Joel Corry shared a theory for why Gonzalez hasn't yet put pen to paper on a deal.

"It wouldn't be surprising for the Patriots to insist that Gonzalez's contract has significantly larger per-game roster bonuses than Witherspoon's," Corry wrote. "...The Patriots will contend that the exorbitant per-game roster bonuses are necessary because of durability concerns. Gonzalez missed the final 13 games of his rookie season in 2023 because of a torn labrum in his right shoulder that required surgery. He also missed the first three games of the 2025 regular season with a hamstring injury." 

On Aug. 30, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that
"the sticking points have more to do with structure and total dollars" attached to what Florio said "will be a four-year extension" if Gonzalez signs one this summer. Later in the week, Gonzalez's trainer claimed that the language in the contract submitted to the player's camp "was kind of trash." It was then said that the Patriots and Gonzalez were "not close on several elements of the deal."   

Why the contract language has become a big deal in Patriots-Christian Gonzalez standoff

On Aug. 25, Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf suggested he would be fine if negotiations with Gonzalez's representatives continued beyond New England's Week 1 game at the Seahawks on Sept. 9. However, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel hinted on Friday that Gonzalez may not play in Seattle if no extension is signed beforehand. 

Gonzalez missed practice time in August due to an "injury" that presumably could flare up at any time. 

"The primary benefit of the roster bonuses is they provide the Patriots some financial relief with injuries," Corry explained. "The per-game amount is only payable if the player is on the active list for that particular game." 

On Thursday, Gonzalez acknowledged that he is "still frustrated" that he remains on his existing contract, which has just two years remaining. One wonders whether or not Gonzalez could ask for a trade if he continues to be unhappy with the language found in extension offers his camp receives over the next handful of days.
