Michigan HC Kyle Whittingham reveals stance on QB Bryce Underwood's job security

Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood avoided disaster Saturday night by completing a last-second Hail Mary to take down Western Michigan. Of course, the play itself was controversial after the Wolverines were seemingly given an extra second to attempt one final play.

Yet the reality of the situation is that Michigan is 1-0 and Underwood helped his team take home the win. The victory helps distract from the fact he finished 12-of-22 for 170 yards and a touchdown, with 47 of those yards and his only touchdown pass coming on that final play.

That is not what Michigan and head coach Kyle Whittingham had in mind for Underwood against a MAC opponent in WMU.

Whittingham spoke with the media Monday and offered up an interesting comment on Underwood, via Fox College Football.

"He's our QB, right now," the head coach said. "It's not something that's infinite. At some point, we've got to turn a corner, and we've got to see improvement."

Whittingham is in his first season as Michigan's head coach and doesn't appear to be too impressed with Underwood. Calling him the quarterback "right now" opens the door for a potential move later in the season.

One interpretation of this can be the coach is trying to light a fire under his player. Underwood is making several million dollars this year at Michigan and may just need a wake-up call. Another view is that Whittingham may already be thinking about true freshman backup Tommy Carr.

The good news for Underwood is that he has a chance to prove his mettle this week against a tough Oklahoma Sooners squad. A great performance will make his rough outing against WMU look like an anomaly.

However, another dud may have Whittingham ready to move on, regardless of Underwood's NIL salary.
