UNC dealing with recruiting violation as Bill Belichick era gets more tumultuous

For years, Bill Belichick made the right type of news.

He won multiple Super Bowls as the head coach of the New England Patriots and became known as one of the ultimate winners in sports. Sure, he had some moments in which he was a bit crabby to reporters, and his choice of cut-off hoodie wasn't exactly stylish, but it was all part of the aura in New England.

None of that aura has followed him to the college football level, as he's now trudging through his second season as head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Last season, Belichick went 4-8, and the headlines surrounded his girlfriend, 25-year-old Jordon Hudson, more than UNC's positive plays on the field.

And sure, the Tar Heels got off to a decent start in 2026 by beating TCU, 15-10, in the Aur Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland, in late August.

Since then, though, general manager Michael Lombardi resigned after an internal investigation into a human resources complaint led to attorneys questioning his "role in hiring and firing decisions regarding female and minority staffers," according to ESPN.

It's now being reported that the Tar Heels won't be hosting recruits for their first home game of the season, against East Tennessee State, after self-reporting a recruiting violation.

"The situation has been properly resolved through the NCAA process, and we have worked with the NCAA and University compliance on appropriate and corrective action," UNC spokesman Kevin Best said, according to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN).

What is going on at North Carolina?

Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick was placed on administrative leave, and on Sept. 3, WRAL reported that "lawyers hired to conduct the investigation are also questioning people about whether defensive coordinator Steve Belichick used drugs on the job or provided drugs to at least one player."

Given the turmoil, there could be some fire behind the smoke that Belichick has zero institutional control at North Carolina. At times last season, his girlfriend, Hudson, seemed more in control than he did.

In the grand scheme of things, this recruiting violation is small-potatoes news, especially in the NIL and transfer portal era.

But with everything else going on at UNC, this becomes just the latest red mark on a report card that's flirting dangerously with failing grades for the once-legendary head football coach.
