Bears reward D'Andre Swift ahead of Week 1 with three-year extension

Just days before the Chicago Bears kick off their season, D’Andre Swift has another reason to be extra motivated for the season opener.

The veteran running back has agreed to a contract extension with the team, securing his place in Chicago beyond 2026. As if a chance at back-to-back postseason appearances wasn't enough motivation, Swift will now have the thought of working to earn his payday in his mind as well.

D'Andre Swift is in Chicago for the long haul

According to ESPN's NFL insider Adam Schefter, Swift and the Bears have agreed on a three-year, $33.75 million extension with $27.5 million guaranteed.

Swift signed with Chicago as a free agent ahead of the 2024 season after previous seasons with the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles. If he remains with the Bears throughout the entirety of his extension, he'll have spent over half his career with Chicago.

D'Andre Swift had a career season in 2025

In the first year with Ben Johnson as his head coach and play-caller, Swift had the best season of his six-year career. He tallied career highs in rushing yards (1,087) and rushing touchdowns (nine).

He's now had a full offseason and another training camp to continue to grow and learn Johnson's complicated, but effective offense that has been so difficult for defenses to stop.

What does this mean for Kyle Monangai?

With the extension of Swift, it is clear he is RB1 likely through the end of his new extension. Behind him, though, is the former seventh-round pick, Kyle Monangai.

Despite being selected in the seventh round, Monangai impressed as a rookie. He rushed for 783 yards and five touchdowns, making him among the best backup running backs in the league.

Monangai is an extremely solid backup option, but it will be intriguing to see if he grows tired of playing second fiddle to Swift and asks to be traded or chooses not to sign an extension when that time comes.
