Cowboys get tough injury news right before season opener vs. Giants

The Dallas Cowboys are coming up on a new season and a fresh start. They weren't bad last season, boasting a 7-9 record. But they need to be better to get to the playoffs, and the team got hit with some bad injury news on Friday during practice.

The Cowboys and Jerry Jones have a fresh injury to deal with after running back Malik Davis was carted off the practice field on Friday.

According to Tommy Yarrish of the team's official website, Cowboys COO and co-owner Stephen Jones told 105.3 The Fan that the player had a "pretty serious injury" that "could take him out for some period of time."

Specifically, it's a hip injury, according to Nick Harris of the Star-Telegram.

Cowboys suffer concerning injury ahead of season opener

Cowboys beat writer Clarence Hill Jr. of DLLS Cowboys added more context to the situation.

"Cowboys RB Malik Davis was carted off the practice field with an injury, per source. The Cowboys are looking into the severity of it," Hill stated on X. "Doesn't look good for Sunday at the moment. Hopefully it's not too serious. Davis was finally getting his opportunity."

Last season, Davis appeared in 10 games for the Cowboys. He had 250 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 52 carries. Losing him would mean this team would not have much depth at running back and would force them to try new players behind starting running back Javonte Williams.

The Cowboys have a few guys ready to go, including running back Emari Demercado and fullback Hunter Luepke. But it's certainly a concerning development right before the season.
