Texans, C.J. Stroud both making smart move to put contract talks on hold

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is facing a big season as he tries to re-establish himself as one of the NFL's elite. The Texans need that from him if they are going to reach their ceiling and become a Super Bowl team. 

Now he needs it to make sure he can secure a big-money, long-term contract extension from the team.

According to a report from ESPN on Saturday, the Texans and Stroud have decided to table their contract talks until the conclusion of the 2026 season.

It makes sense for both Texans, C.J. Stroud to wait on contract

ESPN's Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday that even though both sides had discussed a new deal in the days leading up to the start of the regular season, they both agreed it was best to wait before finalizing anything. 

Houston already picked up Stroud's fifth-year option for the 2027 season.

From Stroud's perspective, it's a bet on himself but one that could pay off in a big way for him if he puts together a big season. If he plays at an elite level and helps Houston go on another deep playoff run, and potentially even a run at the Super Bowl, he is going to have all of the leverage in the world to squeeze every possible dollar out of the Texans. At that point, he will be entering a true contract year and is going to have all of the power in the negotiations, while the price tag for top young quarterbacks just entering their prime could start rising into the $65 million or $70 million per year range. 

From a Texans perspective, it is understandable why they might want to be patient.

Signing a starting quarterback to a long-term deal is the most expensive thing a team can do, and getting it wrong can have long-term ramifications on the franchise. As talented as Stroud is, and for as much promise as he has shown at times in his career, there is still some inconsistency in his game and some question as to how good he actually is. 

If Stroud doesn't progress, or even takes a step backwards, maybe it knows it needs to think about other options, or even gets him signed for a cheaper price.

If he does progress and they have to pay more money, that is a trade-off they are probably willing to make given that it would likely mean they are a Super Bowl-caliber team. 

It's a smart move to wait for both sides. Now, the pressure is really on Stroud to perform.
