The Kansas City Chiefs will have their star quarterback on the field in the season opener on Monday.
As widely speculated, Patrick Mahomes won't miss any more time after missing the end of last season with an ACL injury.
The former MVP attacked his recovery process aggressively and, despite not getting any preseason action, won't have any sort of limitations against Sean Payton's Denver Broncos.
However, given the Chiefs' uncertain offensive line situation, getting No. 15 back on the field might not be the wisest idea.
For most of the Mahomes era, blindside protection has been a major concern for Andy Reid's team.
They hoped that Josh Simmons would put an end to their woes, and he really looked the part when he was available as a rookie. That said, he wasn't available that often.
Simmons is dealing with a back injury, and the Chiefs have been rather coy about his situation. As such, there's no actual timetable for his return.
In his absence, the Chiefs will roll with undrafted rookie free agent Khalil Benson at left tackle. That's a recipe for disaster any day, and much worse with a player coming back from such a major injury.
To make matters even more complicated, the Broncos have one of the stoutest and hardest-hitting defensive fronts in the game.
Mahomes might not be as mobile in his first taste of action in a while, and with Nik Bonitto and company on the other side of the field, it seems like the Chiefs would've been wise to keep Mahomes on the shelf for another week while Justin Fields tried to lead the way.
