Stefon Diggs offers a lame excuse for his TD celebration penalty

Washington Commanders fans are already getting the full Stefon Diggs experience.

The former All-Pro receiver Diggs made his debut for the Commanders in Sunday’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. In the fourth quarter at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa., Diggs caught his first touchdown as a member of the team.

Diggs hauled in a 10-yard pass down the middle from Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels for the score. He then proceeded to celebrate by jumping onto the goalpost, drawing an automatic 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

After the game, Diggs gave a lame excuse for his penalty. While he did take responsbility for the lapse in judgment, Diggs claimed that he forgot the NFL’s rule banning use of the goalpost for celebrations because it had supposedly changed from earlier in his career.

In reality though, the rule actually changed in 2014 (in response to former NFL All-Pro tight end Jimmy Graham causing a delay during a game after damaging the goalpost with a touchdown celebration). Meanwhile, Diggs was not drafted until 2015, so his reasoning here does not hold up.

Diggs’ penalty meant that the Commanders could not go for two to try to tie the game and instead had to settle for an extra point. Washington would ultimately lose to Philadelphia by a final score of 24-22, but at least they know exactly what they have now in Diggs (who has a long history of excessive touchdown celebrations).
