Reporter calls out 'deflating' performance by Cowboys defense

Once again, the Dallas Cowboys drew Super Bowl hype for most of the offseason.

A new defensive coordinator and multiple reinforcements on that side of the ball made Brian Schottenheimer's team look like a legitimate threat.

While that might still be the case, they definitely didn't look the part in their first test of the season.

That's why, after failing to contain Isaiah Likely and Cam Skattebo in Week 1, Bleacher Report's Moe Moton raised questions about Christian Parker. 

Christian Parker's Cowboys debut left plenty to be desired 

"With a new coordinator who had success as the Philadelphia Eagles' defensive backs coach and defensive pass game coordinator and several new acquisitions, the Cowboys defense had one of the most deflating performances, given the offseason excitement around the revamped unit," Moton wrote.

Of course, this was just one game, and Week 1 is often considered just a glorified preseason game.

As such, the Cowboys and their fans should give the new defensive coordinator the benefit of the doubt, more so with all the new pieces that still need to find their footing in Arlington.

"Like any first-time play-caller, Parker should get some grace in a new role, but with the talent on his side of the ball, the Cowboys' patience could quickly run thin with him," he added.

The Cowboys bolstered the defense with star prospect Caleb Downs, fellow rookie Malachi Lawrence, trade acquisition Rashan Gary and free-agent signings Jalen Thompson, Cobie Durant and Von Miller.

They also rolled into the season with a fully healthy Shavon Revel and DeMarvion Overshown, plus Quinnen Williams as the biggest in-season arrival in 2025. 

The pieces are there, and Parker was a rising star in the coaching ranks last year in Philadelphia, so it's too early to sound the alarms.

That said, Parker's seat might get warmer by the day if the Cowboys' defense struggles again in Week 2 vs. the Washington Commanders.
