New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart went down early during the team's "Monday Night Football" game against the Los Angeles Rams. So, that meant minutes for backup quarterback Jameis Winston.
Who is Winston, and are the Giants in good hands? Here's what to know about New York's backup quarterback and his experience.
Winston has been around the NFL long enough to know what it takes to step into a starting role when the situation suddenly changes. The veteran quarterback has played 108 games over his 11-year career, making 87 starts while spending time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns.
Winston has thrown for 24,792 yards and 156 touchdowns during his career, along with 113 interceptions, while completing 61.1% of his passes, according to NFL research. He's also added 1,297 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. More importantly, he's seen just about every kind of situation an NFL quarterback can run into, from being a full-time starter to stepping into a new offense and adjusting to a different role.
That's what makes his experience really valuable if the Giants need him to take over for a longer period. Winston isn't walking into the moment with zero NFL reps or wondering what the speed of the game will feel like. He's been there before, and with years of experience behind him, he has a good idea of what's expected when the ball is suddenly in his hands. That should make Giants followers rest a little easier, too.
