Doc Rivers lands a notable new job after his coaching exit

Doc Rivers is headed back into the booth.

The former NBA Coach of the Year Rivers is officially joining NBC Sports. The network announced on Monday that Rivers will be serving as a game analyst for them.

“I loved playing the game, I loved coaching it, and I’ve always loved talking about it,” Rivers was quoted as saying in the release. “I have great memories working with NBC, and I’m excited to be back and share my perspective alongside such a talented team. This season should be a lot of fun. I can’t wait.”

Now 64 years old, Rivers was a head coach in the NBA for 28 total seasons. Most notably, he was the league’s Coach of the Year in 2000 with the Orlando Magic, led the Boston Celtics to an NBA championship in 2008, and became the NBA’s sixth-winningest head coach of all-time with 1,194 career victories.

But Rivers, a 2026 Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, also has a reputation for playoff shortcomings and generally underachieving despite having top-tier talent at his disposal. Last year with the Milwaukee Bucks was especially disastrous for Rivers as well with the team going 32-50 and Rivers completely losing the confidence of his players down the stretch.

Now it appears that Rivers is officially done with coaching and will be returning to his familiar role as a broadcaster instead. Rivers had previously worked as commentator for both Turner Sports and ESPN and also notably served as a studio analyst for NBC during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
