Extent of Alex Bregman’s injuries from errant foul ball have been revealed

Alex Bregman certainly paid the price for being in the wrong place at the wrong time on Sunday.

The Chicago Cubs third baseman Bregman suffered multiple facial fractures after being struck by a foul ball while standing in the on-deck circle during Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported on Monday. Passan adds that Bregman will not undergo surgery however and is hopeful to return for the Cubs during the postseason.

In the fourth inning at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio on Sunday, Bregman was standing in the on-deck circle during at an-bat by Michael Busch, his Cubs teammate. Busch ended up slicing a foul ball right in Bregman’s direction, and the errant ball struck Bregman in the face (see the video here).

Bregman immediately left the game and headed straight for the clubhouse as the Cubs went on to beat the Reds by an 8-1 final. Several hours later, Bregman shared a nasty photo update documenting the injuries he had suffered.

The 32-year-old Bregman, a three-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, was batting .262 with 26 home runs and 89 RBIs over 153 games played. But with Bregman now confirmed to be dealing with multiple facial fractures, his regular season is officially over.

Chicago currently sits at 87-69 on the season, which is right on the verge of clinching a Wild Card spot in the National League. 22-year-old Pedro Ramirez will likely be stepping in over at third base for the duration of Bregman’s absence as the Cubs hope for a speedy recovery for their $175 million man Bregman.
