Mets fans won't love what Pete Alonso had to say about being an Orioles player

New York Mets fans repeatedly showed their love for Baltimore Orioles slugger Pete Alonso throughout the series between the clubs held at Citi Field earlier in September. 

Following the Orioles' 4-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night, Alonso offered a quote that sparked plenty of conversations on New York sports radio station WFAN and that may annoy some Mets supporters.

"I believe in the baseball gods, and I honestly believe that, like, I'm here for a reason," Alonso said about playing for the Orioles, as shared by Avi Carr-Gloth of WMAR-2 News. "I was always meant to be a Baltimore Oriole, and I think people are very appreciative and receptive to that, and I feel just as lucky and fortunate to be here as other people have told me. So it's special. That's really an understatement." 

Alonso was a homegrown Met who played only for the club from when he made his MLB debut in 2019 through the 2025 season. Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns then controversially chose not to sign the franchise's all-time home run king to a long-term contract, and Alonso ultimately inked a five-year, $155M deal to join the Orioles.

While the 73-85 Mets spent the bulk of the summer knowing they had no chance of making the playoffs, Alonso slashed .264/.359/.512 with an .871 OPS, 41 home runs and 110 RBI over his first 159 games with Baltimore en route to becoming a potential American League MVP candidate. That said, the 78-81 Orioles began Thursday knowing they likely also won't participate in the postseason tournament. 

Pete Alonso wanted to "recognize" Orioles fans

"I know this hasn’t been the season that we wanted internally, and it’s not the season that’s expected internally," Alonso added on Wednesday night, per Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner. "The people who have supported us, it’s not what they expected or wanted either. For people to still show up, come out to a doubleheader today, and really just show the true support, it’s special, and that should be recognized." 

If nothing else, Alonso's latest comments won't help Stearns' popularity among the Mets fans who chanted for team owner Steve Cohen to fire the executive before and after Alonso crushed his 300th career home run in Queens on Sept. 15.
