Stephen Curry sends clear message to Warriors with contract extension

As if there was ever any doubt, Stephen Curry has signed a contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, ensuring that the superstar guard stays with the only franchise he has ever known. Interestingly, though, he reportedly took a considerable discount on his new deal, which is reportedly less than the maximum he could have gotten from the front office.

Curry has never been someone too engrossed in money, but his taking a discount signals that he is still quietly pleading for the Warriors' brain trust to do something about the opening he generated. Simply put, the superstar wants to win in his twilight years, and the front office should abide.

Building a roster that can contend is trickier for those teams with older compositions as it requires a two-way effort. For aging franchise centerpieces like Curry, that means being willing to take less money to give the team more flexibility. For the front office, that means being competent enough to go after players who can extend their window for winning.

Curry has already done his part. Now, the ball is in the Dubs' court to prove that they can still trot out a team that can compete for meaningful success as their franchise player nears the end of his career.

Right now, one could firmly say that Golden State has not delivered in that regard. The team missed the playoffs last season, yet there has been little improvement for the team over the summer. With the Western Conference being a brutal race, they could very well end up getting left behind.

With Stephen Curry still playing at an All-NBA level, expectations will remain lofty in San Francisco. The Warriors have a tremendous amount of hoopla around them, so they certainly cannot afford to just punt the remaining years of their superstar's legendary career.
