Will Wade, LSU get massive recruiting win over John Calipari, others

LSU Tigers head basketball coach Will Wade is making a ton of noise this offseason for his unconventional approach to roster building.

He's going all-in on the fifth-year players from the class of 2022, and he very well could find himself without those players when it matters most, pending legal challenges.

In fact, LSU's current roster stands at just four players as we wait for eligibility battles to play out. The Tigers can't even field a starting lineup, and Wade knows that he's taking a risk.

The risk is worth the reward to him, but it could all go up in flames. It's unconventional, without a doubt, but that doesn't mean that Wade skirted his traditional responsibilities on the recruiting trail in the meantime.

In fact, over the weekend, the Tigers picked up a massive 2027 commitment from five-star guard King Gibson.

Gibson, from Geneva, Ohio, chose Wade and the Tigers over John Calipari and Arkansas, Pat Kelsey and Louisville, and Bryan Hodgson and Providence.

Gibson is ranked as the No. 3 combo guard in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite. Rivals ranks him even higher.

Gibson checks in at 6-foot-4, 185 pounds, and he brings a ton to the table as a prospect. At SPIRE Academy, playing for one of the best high school teams in the country, he averaged 15 points per game alongside 3.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds. In AAU play, those numbers bumped up to 16 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

"King Gibson has a sturdy frame and an ability to dribble, shoot, and pass to an advantage. He is also someone who started high school with a reputation and has continued to get better each year," writes Rivals recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw.

This is a big addition for Wade and LSU, especially because Gibson was coming off an official visit to Fayetteville with Calipari and the Razorbacks.

The Tigers got him to Baton Rouge straight away, though, and that sealed the deal.
