Buffalo Sabres general manager Jarmo Kekalainen indicated that sixth-year defenseman Owen Power would take a big step during the 2026-27 NHL season.
After the Sabres lost to the Montreal Canadiens in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, Kekalainen said Power was "only scratching the surface." Now, it appears he has cracked the surface and may be the engine for a Buffalo team that's aiming to vault to the next level after snapping its 14-year playoff drought last season.
Power punctuated a comeback win for Buffalo on Tuesday night. In the final minute of overtime, center Jiri Kulich saw Power flying down the middle of the ice. He then flicked a pass to the D-man, who scored on a low wrist shot on the stick side of goalie Jesper Wallstedt to secure a 3-2 win for the Sabres, who have improved to 2-1. Minnesota, meanwhile, is now 2-0-1.
That capped a bonkers night in Buffalo. The Sabres trailed 2-0 at the end of the second period but responded in the third. Center Noah Ostlund scored 3:55 into the third period, and center Tage Thompson followed nearly six minutes later. Power and fellow defenseman Rasmus Dahlin assisted on the first goal.

"That period ruled," Jon Scott of WGRZ-TV in Buffalo wrote postgame. "That's the Sabres of a year ago. Also, it's ... very early, but Owen Power looking like a No. 1 overall pick."

That's the #Sabres of a year ago.
Also... it's very early, but Owen Power looking like a #1 overall pick.
Through three games, 2021 No. 1 pick Power has logged five points (four assists and one goal). He's also already scored more game-winning goals (one) than last season and is getting better at capitalizing on opportunities around the net. The D-man has posted a career-best 33.3 shooting percentage (goals scored/shots on goal × 100).
It's super early, but it's fair to wonder whether some will say Power is OP (overpowered) at the end of the season. The D-man, who turns 24 on Nov. 22, may be on the verge of breaking out.
