Stephen A. Smith under heavy criticism for Lane Johnson comments

Stephen A. Smith is no stranger to controversy, but his latest comments have drawn the ire of NFL fans.

The ESPN personality is facing backlash after appearing to mock Philadelphia Eagles star Lane Johnson’s retirement announcement, with many criticizing Smith for what they viewed as an unnecessary shot at the longtime offensive lineman.

Stephen A. Smith appeared to mock Lane Johnson

On Wednesday's episode of "First Take," Smith discussed Johnson's abrupt retirement, and his comments quickly sparked outrage across social media.

Smith went on a rant about Johnson citing his mental health as being the reason for the sudden retirement. It was clear to see that the rest of the desk crew were a bit on edge and not thrilled listening to what appeared to be Smith mocking Johnson and his situations outside of football that led to his retirement decision.

After a commercial break, Smith once again spoke and wanted to clear things up. He said that he would never make light of mental health and that he was more so making light of what an awful season the Philadelphia Eagles are going through.

The comments were an extremely bad look for Stephen A. Smith

Smith often finds himself at the center of controversy in the sports media world, but Wednesday's comments, regardless of the true intent, were many steps over the line.

Smith himself has spoken out about mental health issues he went through during the loss of his mother. To know the struggles he had himself, the unseriousness shown during the segment on Wednesday was shocking to see.

Many have called for Smith to issue a public apology and in this case, it seems like that would be the correct thing to do.
