ESPN report clarifies Yankees manager Aaron Boone’s job security after playoff exit

A second straight year of losing in the ALDS may not ultimately affect the status quo in New York.

The New York Yankees are expected to retain manager Aaron Boone for next season, ESPN’s Buster Olney reported on Thursday. Olney adds that the Yankees are also expected to keep and extend their general manager Brian Cashman, who is said to be “really close” with Boone.

The update on Cashman’s future is effectively a rehash of what we have known for several weeks now. But Boone’s future with the Yankees had seemed like a much more open-ended question, especially since he is entering his final year under contract in 2027.

Boone, 53, has been the manager of the Yankees since 2018. While he has led the team to three ALCS berths and a World Series appearance in 2024, the team now seems to be going in the wrong direction under Boone’s leadership.

This now marks the sixth season (and second in a row) that Boone has failed to get the Yankees past the divisional round. That includes a 2023 season in which the team missed the playoffs altogether.

Boone, who does hold a 790-565 (.583) overall record in New York, had been facing firing rumors even before the Yankees got swept in this year’s ALDS by the division rival Tampa Bay Rays. Star Yankees slugger Aaron Judge also seems to be putting some real pressure on the team right now, but it does not sound like that will ultimately translate into Boone’s dismissal.
