South Carolina women's basketball has landed another elite recruit, and this one could fill a significant need for Dawn Staley's program.
Five-star point guard Jezelle "GG" Banks, the No. 4 prospect in ESPN's 2027 recruiting rankings, committed to the Gamecocks on Saturday.
Banks chose South Carolina over SEC rivals Texas and LSU, giving Staley another high-level talent to build around as the program continues pursuing national championships.
Banks’ combination of playmaking, scoring ability and defensive effort makes her a particularly intriguing fit for the Gamecocks.

Even though the Gamecocks have consistently recruited elite talent under Staley, the program has faced a shortage of true point guards in recent recruiting cycles.
The Gamecocks have signed just one high school point guard since landing Raven Johnson in 2021. Maddy McDaniel, who joined the program as a freshman, left in August, making the position an important recruiting priority.
Staley’s system emphasizes pace, athleticism and defensive intensity. Banks can initiate the offense, attack the paint and make plays for teammates rather than relying exclusively on scoring.
Banks is one of the most gifted passers and playmakers in recent memory. Her ability to see the floor and operate in pick-and-roll situations gives South Carolina another option for creating offense against opposing defenses. One of Banks' biggest strengths is that she doesn't have to dominate the ball to influence a game.
Staley often allows freshman point guards to play off the ball early as they adjust to the college game. Banks' skill set should allow her to contribute in that role while developing as a full-time floor general. At 5-foot-10, Banks has good length for a guard and could play alongside another ball-handler in smaller lineups.
Her perimeter shooting remains an area for development, but continued improvement could make her even more difficult to defend. Banks is a promising addition to a program that regularly competes against some of the nation's best teams. She is the second commitment in South Carolina's 2027 recruiting class, joining fellow guard Taylor Brown.
Banks will not arrive in Columbia until the 2027-28 season, so expectations should be tempered when projecting her immediate impact. Still, her talent and versatility give her a chance to become an important piece of the Gamecocks' future.
