Kids who will be playing on Sundays: Ole Miss' Trinidad Chambliss continues to make QB1 case for 2027 NFL Draft

Each week, Yardbarker spotlights college football stars, some of whom will be playing on NFL Sundays. With that in mind, here are Week 7 standouts.

Ole Miss Rebels senior QB Trinidad Chambliss

Chambliss (6-foot, 205 pounds) may lack the ideal frame of a QB1 in the NFL Draft. But has there been a better QB in college football this season?

Chambliss outplayed his former backup, Austin Simmons, in a 31-3 drubbing of the Missouri Tigers, completing 20-of-36 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for a TD. He ranks 11th in the nation in QBR (83.5) heading into a Week 8 road game against the Texas Longhorns.

"A lot will be made about Chambliss' smaller frame and the fact he'll be 25 years old before the 2027 NFL season even begins, but he's the ultimate point guard at the quarterback position," wrote ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. on his latest big board.

Kiper ranks Chambliss as his QB3 behind Miami Hurricanes junior Darian Mensah and Oklahoma State Cowboys sophomore Drew Mestemaker. He'll remain a potential first-rounder if he stays in the Heisman race. As of Sunday morning, FanDuel Sportsbook gives him the third-best Heisman odds (+650) behind Mensah (+390) and Ohio State Buckeyes junior WR Jeremiah Smith (-115).

Florida State Seminoles senior WR Duce Robinson

Robinson caught five passes for 113 yards and two TDs in a 43-35 double-overtime loss to Miami. Some argue it should've been three TDs. The WR appeared to secure possession during a scrum on Florida State's second Hail Mary attempt at the end of the second OT. However, officials awarded the ball to Miami defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald.

Florida State is now 3-4 after failing to pull off the upset. Playing for a team that's out of College Football Playoff contention will limit Robinson's chances to improve his draft stock. NFL Mock Draft Database lists him as prospect No. 72 on its big board.

Robinson (6-foot-6, 230 pounds) should still get drafted. He may even have a better pro career if he lands in the right situation.

"His size and athleticism suggest an NFL chess piece, blurring the line between wide receiver and receiving tight end," wrote The Ringer's Todd McShay in his Sunday column. "I expect him to get drafted. Athletic testing will help determine how early, but the bigger question is whether an NFL staff can turn the flashes of potential into consistent impact."

Tennessee Volunteers senior RB DeSean Bishop

Bishop almost accepted a scholarship with the Appalachian State Mountaineers instead of walking on at Tennessee. The Volunteers are glad the Knoxville native stayed close to home.

In a 26-10 win over the Alabama Crimson Tide, Bishop ran for 159 yards and two TDs on 32 carries, taking the pressure off backup QB George MacIntyre. Expect the RB, who ranks third in the nation in rushing yards (837 on 139 carries), to keep carrying the offense while starting QB Faizon Brandon recovers from a shoulder issue.

Bishop just missed the cut for Kiper's top-five RBs on his big board. If he keeps excelling, the back may land in that group later this fall.

Houston Cougars senior WR Amare Thomas

The 2027 WR class keeps growing deeper. Add Thomas to the list of wideouts to watch.

Thomas had seven receptions for 126 yards and two TDs in a 35-32 win over Oklahoma State. Just as important for NFL scouts, he also showed his ability to generate yards after the catch on a 51-yard gain in the third quarter.

Thomas shouldn't be a first-rounder in a class that includes Charlie Becker (Indiana Hoosiers) and Smith. That said, he may be a Day 2 steal. Pro Football Network ranks him as WR9 in the draft and projects him as a second-rounder.

"Thomas appears as natural at the WR position, with a tantalizing three-level threat profile that translates to starter upside at the NFL level," wrote PFN's scouting department.

LSU Tigers senior safety Ty Benefield

Benefield may be the next star DB from "DBU."

The Boise State Broncos transfer grabbed his first interception of the season in a 31-0 blowout against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. He also had four tackles.

The Ringer's Steve Muench rated Benefield as his No. 4 safety in preseason. In his scouting report, he noted, "his tackling needs significant improvement."

Benefield is making those substantial improvements. Per Pro Football Focus, he has posted a career-best 5.7 percent missed tackle rate through seven games.
