Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud entered this season under more pressure than most players in the NFL.
His play declined sharply in the two years following his historic rookie season, and it had many people questioning whether he is truly the guy in Houston. Then, when the Texans approached Stroud about a long-term extension, he turned it down and chose to double down on himself.
Although the team record doesn’t say it just yet, the former No. 2 overall pick has proven himself right so far, throwing for 1,714 yards and nine touchdowns through six games. He has objectively been one of the best quarterbacks in the league so far, and he continued to prove that Sunday morning against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Stroud threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns against one of the best defenses in the league. Although he did throw his first interception of the season, he led Houston on an impressive two-minute drive to win the game, 34-31.
Stroud had already been playing great this year, but he looked even more comfortable and confident in his first game with wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
The former No. 4 overall pick was sent over from the Arizona Cardinals last week, and he had a nice debut with his new club, catching three passes for 34 yards, with each catch moving the chains.
Now 2-4, with the offense continuing to ascend to new heights, Houston just needs its defense to return to its 2025 form to become a true contender in the AFC. It is two games back of the division lead as it tries to climb out of the 0-4 hole it built for itself.
If the defense reaches that level again while Stroud is playing this well, then it will instantly become one of the scarier teams in its conference.
