Despite having just the 20th highest payroll in Major League Baseball, the Milwaukee Brewers have constructed a captivating 2026 roster. It has paid off, as they will make their second World Series appearance in franchise history.
According to Fangraphs and baseball reporter Francys Romero, the Brewers only had a 2.1% chance of winning the World Series on Opening Day. Their opponent, the Tampa Bay Rays, had just a 1.1% chance.
Ironically, both teams defied the odds and will go head-to-head in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday.
The Brewers tactic of utilizing the "Moneyball approach'' has illustrated how teams with lower payrolls are still capable of success by going after hidden talent. They proved how the approach works as they successfully swept the Los Angeles Dodgers, who own the highest payroll in MLB.

While the Brewers have constructed their 2026 roster with several additions, there are a few who deserve special mention.
Young outfield star Jackson Chourio has continued to live up to his nickname as ''Mr. October'' by providing clutch hits, including a historic 9th-inning walk-off single in Game 2 of the NLDS against the San Diego Padres. The Brewers signed Chourio as an international free agent in 2021 at the age of just 16.
But what was even more shocking was that they signed him to an eight-year, $82 million contract extension in 2023 at the age of 19 before he even made his MLB debut, illustrating the trust they had in their young homegrown talent. That trust has paid off immensely.
Jake Bauers is another stellar addition who the Brewers acquired through a trade with the New York Yankees in 2023 in order to bolster their lineup with a solid left-handed power bat. Across eight games in this year's postseason, he has slashed .269/.441/.423 with one home run, six RBI and a double.
His dominance granted him NLCS MVP honors as he was a strong contributor that helped with knocking out the 2025 World Series champions. Among all things, his 12-pitch walk against Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto in Game 3 illustrated his strong plate discipline.
Last but not least, 2018 first round pick Brice Turang has recorded a career-best 2026 season for the Brewers, recording his first 20-plus home run campaign. He also led the team with 156 hits, 100 RBI and 102 runs scored and played pivotal small ball in the postseason. In Game 2 of the NLCS, he drew a critical walk against Yamamoto that helped set up Christian Yelich's go-ahead two-run single in the third inning.
