Michigan's Kyle Whittingham reportedly makes Tommy Carr, Bryce Underwood decision

It didn't take very long for Michigan Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham to make a serious change.

With the struggles of former five-star recruit Bryce Underwood, Whittingham will reportedly be turning to his backup Tommy Carr full-time.

Tommy Carr is QB1 moving forward

According to college football insider Pete Nakos, it will be Carr getting the start at quarterback on Saturday against No. 6 Indiana. Carr replaced Underwood in Michigan's most recent win over Penn State, and it appears that he is now QB1 moving forward.

The benching of Underwood is not surprising, as he's struggled in a major way this season. He's got just 924 passing yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions. His completion percentage is 58.1%, one of the lowest in college football.

What to know about Tommy Carr

Carr is a true freshman and a hometown kid from Saline, Michigan, just nine miles from Ann Arbor. He was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and is the brother of Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr.

In his junior and senior season in high school, Carr accounted for 78 touchdowns (64 passing, 14 rushing) compared to just 13 interceptions. He once totaled nine touchdowns in a single game, tied for the third-most in an MHSAA game.

Saturday against Penn State was just the second game Carr had appeared in this season. He completed 5-of-7 passes for 47 yards while also carrying four times for 36 yards with a touchdown.

What does the future hold for Bryce Underwood?

Underwood arrived on campus at Michigan last season as one of the highest-paid players in the country. Now, less than two seasons into his collegiate career, he's been benched for a true freshman with just nine career pass attempts.

In the world of NIL and the transfer portal, there's certainly a possibility that Underwood decides to leave Michigan after the season and look another opportunity elsewhere.

If that is indeed what happens, it will be interesting to see what schools are interested in the former five-star recruit after what he's put on film against college defenses.
