While speaking with reporters shortly after the Los Angeles Chargers suffered a 22-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that dropped the Chargers to 0-6 this past Sunday, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh suggested that he could part ways with first-year offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel during the club's Week 7 bye.
On Monday, Harbaugh had an opportunity to publicly back McDaniel. The head coach instead went in a different direction.
"We're looking into everything at this point, and that process is ongoing," Harbaugh responded when asked about McDaniel on Monday afternoon, per Eric Smith of the Chargers' website. "Particularly offensively, scoring more points, the different multiple situational ways we need to play more complementary football."
According to ESPN stats, the Chargers ended Week 6 ranked 26th in the NFL with an average of 287.2 yards per game and 30th with an average of 15 points scored per contest. Meanwhile, the StatMuse website shows that Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has thus far committed a league-worst 10 turnovers this season.
Per Pro Football Reference, Herbert began Tuesday ranked last in the league among qualified players with a 29.9 adjusted QBR and 31st out of 33 signal-callers with a 68.8 passer rating on the campaign.
"Everything that relates to moving the ball," Harbaugh said about the previously mentioned process. "Putting ourselves in a more advantageous position, efficient plays on first down, red-zone efficiency. Ball at the 1-yard line, we have to get it to the end zone. Backed up, third down, all situations."
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is among those who have reported that Harbaugh could replace McDaniel with passing game specialist Adam Gase. Gase previously served as head coach of the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets.
On Monday, Florio shared that a source said the Chargers may be "considering whether to reassign McDaniel and, if so, what his new role would be."
Following the Chargers' bye, they will face the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Nov. 1. The 2-4 Rams play at the 3-3 Las Vegas Raiders on Oct. 25.
"0-6 does not give the privilege to rule out anything at this point," Harbaugh added during his comments. "And we're looking into everything."
