A Wednesday report revealed that first-year New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh had replaced veteran Jameis Winston with 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy as the team's starting quarterback for when the 3-2-1 Giants play the 2-4 Houston Texans this coming Sunday afternoon.
Later on Wednesday afternoon, Harbaugh confirmed he had made the switch.
"All things considered, will give us the best chance to play the best offense we can," Harbaugh said about the quarterback change, per Colin Martin of SNY. "I thought Jameis has done a tremendous job, won us games, played well. But as we go forward here, this is gonna be our direction, and we think it gives us some good options on offense."
Winston had served as Harbaugh's first-choice option ever since Week 1 QB1 Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 2. The Giants then went 2-0-1 in Winston starts before he was benched in favor of McCarthy when New York was trailing the New Orleans Saints 34-10 early in the fourth quarter of this past Sunday's game at MetLife Stadium.
In that relief appearance, McCarthy went 11-of-21 passing for 243 yards with a touchdown and an interception. In total, he led three scoring drives and rushed for a team-high 26 yards on two attempts in what became a 34-27 loss to New Orleans.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Jordan Raanan, "the Giants' running game (or lack thereof) was a factor in the decision because...McCarthy allows the Giants to utilize more of the offense they designed for Dart leading into the season."
Previously, some thought that Harbaugh could wait until the club's Week 8 bye to make the full-time switch to McCarthy. It sounds like McCarthy could be relegated back to QB2 duties during the bye if he fails to impress against the Texans.
"Life is day-to-day, minute-to-minute. There's really no guarantees," Harbaugh said about the Giants' quarterback situation, as shared by SNY. "I would never say that anything is permanent in football or life."
That said, Harbaugh did acknowledge that McCarthy serving as the Giants starter until further notice is "the plan going forward." Harbaugh also seemed impressed with how well McCarthy has learned the Giants playbook since Big Blue acquired the 23-year-old from the Minnesota Vikings in late September.
"He's got the gameplan down. I think he had it down last week pretty fully, even more so this week."
