Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash has surprisingly named Nick Martinez to start Game 1 of the 2026 World Series on Friday night. The decision to choose Martinez over ace Drew Rasmussen, while somewhat shocking, makes sense.
The move was certainly unexpected as Rasmussen has been a stabilizing and reliable force in the Rays rotation, alongside Freddy Peralta. Rasmussen had also started Game 1 of both the ALDS and the ALCS and has recorded a 2-0 record with a 1.29 ERA and 23 strikeouts.
While Martinez may not be the Rays' No. 1 ace, he still has performed well in the postseason. The 36-year-old right-hander has allowed just three runs across nine innings in the ALDS and ALCS.
Additionally, he earned his first All-Star nod this season and put up a stellar performance in the regular season, boasting a 15-6 record and 3.10 ERA and 109 strikeouts.

The Rays also likely want to provide more rest for Rasmussen and he likely will be in line to start Game 2, providing him an extra day off.
Also, shifting Rasmussen to Game 2 would line up Peralta to pitch Game 3 and it gives him a strategic advantage, as he's dominated at Tropicana Field.
Martinez will pitch against flamethrower Jacob Misiorowski and while that might appear daunting, ''The Miz'' hasn't exactly been his regular masterclass self. While he has still maintained elite velocity, his WHIP is a bit elevated compared to the regular season (1.15 vs. 0.80).
Martinez has a favorable 3.00 ERA this postseason and has the prime opportunity to rise to the occasion for the Rays. Misiorowski also has 11 strikeouts compared to six for Martinez, who won Game 4 of the ALCS. Misiorowski has earned two no-decisions and has four walks over Martinez's three.
