Even before New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner confirmed that Yankees vice president/general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone would be staying in their roles through at least this offseason, a report suggested Steinbrenner didn't want a new manager having to deal with uncertainty related to how the coming labor dispute could disrupt the 2027 campaign.
For her latest Yankees mailbag, MLB insider Chelsea Janes of SNY noted that Boone is a favorite among players for reasons that go beyond the fact that he guided the club to eight playoff trips and one World Series appearance from 2018 through this fall.
"While Hal Steinbrenner is not as prone to making changes as his father was, managing the Yankees in the age of social media might provide an equivalent stressor: Boone is a constant public punching bag, even when the Yankees are winning," Janes wrote. "Whatever frustration the public has with that approach, his players respect it, and people want to play for the Yankees, in part, because Boone takes the punches for them. So the Yankees need someone who understands the scrutiny, accepts that it is part of the job, and has a deep-rooted plan and personality capable of handling it. I think that list is a lot shorter than it feels sometimes."
Team captain Aaron Judge and other key Yankees players made it known after the club was bounced from the American League Division Series by the Tampa Bay Rays that "every guy in this locker room stands behind" Boone. While the Bronx Bombers have thus far failed to return to the AL Championship Series after their trip to the 2024 World Series, Judge said following the final loss to the Rays that the Yankees need to "go all-in" to support Boone this offseason.
"I do feel that, for all the completely understandable angst around Boone after another playoff failure this year, it is not as easy to replace him with someone who will steer them to the playoffs every year as it might seem," Janes added. "Perhaps that is why the Yankees front office did not prioritize a change ahead of a strange offseason. Perhaps they believe Boone is one of the few people who can handle the job reliably at this unique moment in the history of the franchise."
Boone is only signed through the 2027 season and seemingly won't receive an extension before whenever Opening Day arrives. Regardless of how well-liked he is among Yankees players, he may need to lead the Yankees to at least another World Series appearance to still be employed by the club in 2028.
