Why a Teoscar Hernandez reunion would be a risky move for Blue Jays

When it comes to 34-year-old Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Teoscar Hernandez, the thought of him reuniting with the Toronto Blue Jays sparks nostalgia.

While it seems like a good move that the franchise should jump on, in fact, it's quite the opposite. This season presented a significant decline in his performance, as he hit .267 with 16 home runs and 64 RBI across 125 games, down from his 33-home-run campaign in 2024.

As well, his defense in the outfield has graded out negatively across the last three seasons in a Dodgers uniform, signaling that he's better suited in a designated hitter (DH) role.

But the Blue Jays will already have the DH role filled with Anthony Santander returning, and considering that Hernandez is an aging veteran, adding him would block the young talent that they possess. Toronto already showcased how trading away veteran starting pitcher Kevin Gausman was a massive win with rookie sparkplug Brett Bateman.

Why Blue Jays shouldn't chase a familiar face with Teoscar Hernandez

Toronto will want to aim to continue to develop players such as Yohendrick Pinango, Jonatan Clase and Charles McAdoo who showed upside in the majors this season. McAdoo bat .258 with three home runs and 14 RBI across 36 games, showcasing immense potential, and is deserving to see more playing time in the big leagues.

As well, before landing on the 60-day injured list, Clase bat .273 with two home runs across nine games, providing an immediate impact. Lastly, while Pinango's defense needs significant development, he proved to be clutch with 44 hits across 58 games with five home runs, eight doubles and 20 RBI.

If the Blue Jays were to acquire Hernandez, it would cost them $13 million for 2027, which is a steep price considering both his offense and defense has downgraded. The Blue Jays would be better suited not to chase a familiar face and explore other options available on the market, including Seiya Suzuki, Randy Arozarena, Ian Happ and Japanese star Teruaki Sato.
