Buccaneers’ Bucky Irving, Kenneth Gainwell recreate rare feat from 1998

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers turned back the clock on Sunday, with Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell accomplishing something the franchise had not seen since the 1990s.

Both running backs surpassed 100 rushing yards in Tampa Bay’s 16-0 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, matching a rare feat last achieved by Mike Alstott and Warrick Dunn in 1998, according to the Buccaneers database.

Irving led the way with 170 rushing yards, while Gainwell also delivered a productive afternoon on the ground. Their performances helped Tampa Bay overcome heavy rain and a difficult passing environment, allowing the Buccaneers to secure a shutout without needing a conventional offensive approach.

The victory also marked a historic moment for a franchise whose running game has occasionally produced memorable performances.

The last time Tampa Bay had two 100-yard rushers in the same game was November 1, 1998, when Alstott and Dunn delivered against the Minnesota Vikings. Alstott rushed for 128 yards on 19 carries, while Dunn added 115 yards on 18 attempts. The Buccaneers won 27-24, handing Minnesota its first loss of the season after the Vikings had opened the campaign with seven consecutive victories.

That performance became an important moment in Tampa Bay's history. The 1998 Buccaneers finished 8-8, but their victory over one of the league's most explosive offenses demonstrated how effective their ground game could be. The team rushed for 246 yards that afternoon, with both Alstott and Dunn scoring touchdowns. It remains the previous example of two Buccaneers running backs surpassing 100 rushing yards in the same game.

How the 2026 feat is different for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The 2026 team's accomplishment came under very different circumstances. Tampa Bay relied heavily on its rushing attack while the defense capitalized on Atlanta's mistakes, including four interceptions thrown by quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Irving and Gainwell provided the offensive foundation, while the Buccaneers' defense ensured the Falcons never found the end zone. The result was a 16-0 victory that gave Tampa Bay a much-needed boost in the NFC South race.

For Buccaneers fans, the comparison between the two games offers a reminder that a dominant ground attack can still define a memorable afternoon. Nearly three decades after Alstott and Dunn powered Tampa Bay past an undefeated Minnesota team, Irving and Gainwell delivered another performance that will stand out in franchise history.
