The first College Football playoff rankings of 2026 officially came out Tuesday night, and the committee left us with more questions than answers. The top five sits at Miami at No. 1, Georgia at No. 2, Utah at No. 3, Indiana at No. 4 and Alabama at No. 5. Here are some of the biggest questions.
Indiana is No. 4 at 8-1. Ohio State is No. 12 at 6-2, eight spots behind the team it beat 19-15 in Bloomington on Oct. 17 to end the Hoosiers' 22-game winning streak. Alabama is No. 5, and Tennessee is No. 13, even though both sit at 6-2, and Tennessee beat the Crimson Tide 26-10 in Knoxville.
Head-to-head results typically carry weight, so these gaps really stand out. CFP chair Hunter Yurachek said on ESPN that the committee compares teams directly only when they sit in the same group, which he called a pod. He said it never reached the point of comparing Indiana and Ohio State.
The thing that hurt the Buckeyes was the way they looked after losing Julian Sayin. Yurachek said they "didn't look like the same Ohio State team" in the 30-18 loss at USC on Saturday. Their other loss came against No. 7 Texas. Indiana, however, has not beaten a ranked team, and its nonconference opponents were North Texas, Howard and Western Kentucky, but its only loss is to Ohio State.
Alabama's case is all about its resume. Yurachek said Alabama and No. 6 Kentucky were in the same pod, and the Crimson Tide won that comparison because of their head-to-head win. Alabama also beat South Carolina, and ESPN Analytics ranked its schedule as the seventh hardest in FBS. The committee just believes that Tennessee has fewer quality wins beyond the one over Alabama.
UCLA was ranked No. 8, tied for the highest CFP ranking in program history, and sits behind a 6-2 Texas, 7-1 Kentucky, 6-2 Alabama, 8-1 Indiana and 7-1 Georgia. The Bruins entered Saturday No. 2 in ESPN's strength of record, but it also noted that they rank outside the top 30 in offensive efficiency. UCLA is averaging 33.5 points while allowing 13.4. The closing stretch is its real test, with road games at Minnesota and Michigan, and a matchup against No. 20 USC.
Utah sits at No. 3 with an 8-0 record, but it only has one ranked win, 21-13 over No. 17 Houston. The Utes also have one of the weaker strengths of schedule. No. 9 BYU and No. 15 Texas Tech each have two ranked wins. However, they did also beat Cincinnati 49-25, who beat Texas Tech the week before 37-24. Utah will host BYU this Saturday, Nov. 7 and visits No. 22 Arizona the week after on Nov. 14, two chances to prove it truly is the third-best team in the nation.
