Kaima Taira may be the most polarizing pitcher to come from Nippon Professional Baseball in years.
Taira had a stellar showing as part of the Hanshin Tigers rotation. He posted a 1.36 ERA and a 0.959 WHIP over his 146 innings, striking out 141 batters with 46 walks.
Taira also has the pure stuff of a potential frontline starter — a fastball that sits in the mid-90s and has topped out at 99 mph and a plus splitter with a cutter, changeup and slider rounding out his arsenal. His arsenal may be the second best of any potential starter available, trailing only Tarik Skubal on the open market.
While Taira has the stuff and NPB results of a potential top-of-the-rotation starter, there are significant question marks. Taira is listed at 5-foot-8 and 209 pounds, giving him the build of a fireplug. His size could work against him as Marcus Stroman is the only pitcher listed at 5-foot-8 or shorter to throw at least 100 innings in a season since Fred Norman in 1979.
Durability is also a question mark. Taira had worked as a starter in 2023 but missed most of the 2024 season with forearm issues as his stuff regressed. He was excellent as a reliever in 2025, and previously from 2019 through 2023, where his power arsenal played up.
Potential durability concerns and size could lead major league teams to view Taira as a late-inning weapon, either in a multi-inning fireman role or a possible closer. However, if a team is willing to gamble that he can withstand the rigors of a major league season as a part of their rotation, they could land a top-of-the-rotation arm at a relative bargain. He just needs to stay healthy.
