Chabal started playing rugby at 16 at Valence Sportif in the federal 2, the CS Bourgoin-Jalleu in the top flight in 1998.

In 2009, Chabal signed for Racing 92, and the next year in 2010 Chabal was ranked the highest-paid rugby player in France earning about a million per year.
