Jim Phillips. The man needs no introduction, as far as I'm concerned. The legendary artist behind some of skateboarding’s most iconic graphics finally had his life and work captured in Art & Life: The Story of Jim Phillips—and if you weren't able to attend one of the screenings, you can officially own it and take it home yourself.
Pre-sale for the film is live, with DVD and Blu-Ray editions available in a limited run. Do people still have DVD players!? I sure as hell do. Peep the trailer below and let's talk Phillips!
“The documentary explores Jim’s dynamic life and career, showcasing his iconic work that has defined an era and secured his place in modern art history,” John Makens, the director and visionary behind the film recently told us. “Jim’s story is a profound narrative of resilience, passion, and enduring artistic vision.”
There’s no denying Jim Phillips helped shape one of skateboarding’s golden eras, and this doc checks all the boxes. Peep the trailer below if you need a little more enticing.
It goes without saying, but skateboarding wouldn’t be the same without the mind of Jim Phillips. And he’s still cranking out art and graphics to this day. From Santa Cruz, California, to the entire world—he’s the man behind the hand.
I was fortunate enough to see the film in Encinitas, California, as they were touring it, and I was blown away. It's ripping. It's heartfelt. It's a must-watch.
The Screaming Hand and Santa Cruz ‘Red Dot’ are about as timeless and iconic as graphics get, and we’re barely just scratching the surface of Jim’s work with those. The dude is truly a legend. If you weren't able to attend one of the screenings, get the disc and play it whenever! I'll do the same.
