Alta Ski Area Celebrates Deep Snowfall Benchmark

At Alta Ski Area, Utah, another seasonal milestone has come and gone.

Late last week, the Little Cottonwood Canyon destination passed 400 inches of seasonal snowfall.

Still, a considerable gap between Alta Ski Area’s current season snowfall total and its average season snowfall total of 548 inches remains.

Incoming snowy weather may close or, at least, narrow that window, though. Starting Thursday, a storm that could deliver more than two feet of snow will hit Alta Ski Area, and the mountain closes on April 20 this year, so there are several weeks left to stack powder.

Alta Ski Area is historically one of North America’s snowiest resorts and, during the 2022-2023 ski season, set a new winter snowfall record of 903 inches.

This season, the ski area has maintained its powder-mecca reputation and, in North America, has only been surpassed by a few resorts—including Alyeska, Alaska—for 2024-2025 snowfall.

Mt. Baker Ski Area, Washington, was ahead of Alta Ski Area earlier this season, too, and as of February 25, was reporting a seasonal snowfall total of 395 inches. That number has likely gone up since then and could exceed Alta Ski Area’s watermark.

And, in a twist that’ll satisfy the East Coasters among us, Jay Peak, Vermont, had four more inches of seasonal snow than Alta Ski Area as of Tuesday, March 11, with 406 inches to Alta Ski Area’s 402 inches.

In Utah, the early season was a bit slow, with an extended period of high-pressure, snowless days at the beginning of December. The ensuing weeks delivered more powder, with February proving to be the snowiest month so far when 109 inches of snow fell. As for March, the jury’s still out, of course, with a final tally still around 20 days away.

The arrival of April likely won’t spell the end of powder skiing at Alta Ski Area. The resort averages 6.7 feet of snow during its final month of operations. As a last hoorah, skiers will gather for Alta Ski Area’s famed end-of-season party, Frank. By then, they’ll probably be wishing for clear skies, warm weather, and slushy turns.

Meanwhile, other resorts throughout the West are set to benefit from the incoming storm this month, according to the latest forecasts from the Powderchasers. Mammoth Mountain, California, for instance, could see well over a foot of snow in the next few days.
