Getting kitted out for ski season isn’t just about finding the perfect outerwear, skis or boots. Completing your kit involves finding the right accessories to keep you comfortable and performing at your best throughout the season. Lucky for you, we've been testing all manner of accessories for skiing, and here's a list of some of our favorites from the past year.
Whether it's overboots to keep your feet warm, a fresh take on ski poles, at-home tuning tools, or innovative eyewear and helmets, we've put it all to the test.
Our Best Of lists are collections of the skis, boots, outerwear, and other gear that stood out to us while testing. If you want to learn more about how reviews work at Powder, we’re very transparent about our process.
These lists are constantly growing and evolving as we try new gear. If you’ve got a favorite piece of equipment that you think we should write about, let us know here. And, if you represent a brand or company and think your gear deserves a writeup, we’d love to get in touch.
Here’s a fun fact: Cold feet don’t need to be a part of skiing. With the SNÜX Overboots, keeping your toes warm inside your ski boots is a simple task. Just strap the graphene-infused neoprene boot covers around your boots, and you’ll notice warmer feet within minutes. Unlike electric boot heaters or heated socks, the SNÜX Overboot doesn’t require remembering to charge batteries or serious boot work to install cables. The SNÜX Overboot comes in nine different colors, and is designed to work with most alpine and touring boots. With some adjustment, it will fit over standard forefoot buckles or a BOA system.
Who knew you could make a better ski pole? Yardsale’s new P1 poles take a serious look at what could make the humble ski pole better, and ratchet the design specs up a notch. With embedded magnets to keep the poles together, comfortable grips and straps, easily swappable resort and powder baskets, and a slew of customizable colors, these are ski poles, elevated.
At-home ski tuning has always been a messy affair, with wax shavings and noxious fumes taking over your garage or kitchen every time you go to wax your skis. With Mountain Flow Eco Wax’s new Infrared (IR) Waxer, you never need to scrape wax off your ski bases again. The IR Waxer is essentially a mini version of the machine many high-end ski shops use to wax skis (the Wintersteiger Wax Future, in case you’re nerdy and wondering), using infrared light to help your bases absorb wax you have rubbed on. Instead of the old messy hot wax process, simply rub on wax, do a few passes with the IR Waxer, and brush it a few times for perfect results. It uses far less wax, creates no mess, and can be done anywhere with a power outlet.
Our testers continue to love Ombraz armless eyewear for all things skiing, whether it’s sunny spring resort laps, stormy backcountry days, or simply lounging at the base area after a long day of ripping groomers. These are a perfect do-it-all piece of eyewear for mountain sports, no matter the season–the armless design doesn't break, they won’t fall off, and the unique style looks great. The Ombraz Teton sunglasses feature color and contrast-boosting Zeiss lenses, available in three frame colors and three lens tints.
Protect your head with Smith’s new Rodeo MIPS helmet, designed with all the latest safety standards and a hard ABS plastic outer shell for increased durability. With a modern, freestyle-inspired fit, the Rodeo MIPS is designed to take extra abuse, perfect for day in day out resort skiing. The helmet comes in seven color options, has a micro-adjust dial (it runs very true to size), removable ear pads, and features compatibility with the Aleck wireless audio system. As a bonus, it’s constructed with a minimum of 30 percent recycled material.
Flat light while skiing is no fun, but unfortunately it’s a reality for anyone who likes to ski when it’s not sunny out. The Gratify Goggles and the CBL2.0 lens were specifically designed to combat flat light, boosting clarity, contrast, and giving you one of the widest fields of view on the market with a single all-conditions lens. The larger frame and strap works well and looks stylish with any size helmet. Shred Optics was co-founded by American Olympic gold medalist Ted Ligety.
Merino wool has long reigned supreme as the base layer material of choice for skiers, and it’s just been elevated by a new manufacturing process called Nuyarn. Using wool as the base material, Nuyarn is a relatively new process that vastly increases merino performance with added durability, faster drying, and better elasticity. TREW utilizes Nuyarn in their new Lightweight long sleeve top, making a perfect base layer for skiing that can double as a casual shirt, or mountain bike jersey.
Ski gloves don’t need to be overly complicated affairs, with multi-layer Gore-Tex, five-way adjustable cuffs, or wipers, pockets, or other erroneous features. Sometimes, simple is better, and that’s where Dakine’s minimalist Mack gloves come in. These simple workwear-inspired gloves feature synthetic suede outers, a thin fleece liner for insulation, and superior dexterity for working with your hands. These are even touchscreen-compatible so you can text your friends how awesome your day was.
Properly supporting your feet and arches inside your ski boot is a surefire way to make your boots more comfortable. SOLE offers some pretty nifty technology in their trim-to-fit options, essentially bridging the gap between full-custom insoles and off-the-shelf fits thanks to an easy optional heat molding process. If the factory fit doesn't agree with your foot shape, follow these directions to pop them in the oven for 2 minutes and get them molded to your arch. Thanks to the additional damping the cork construction provids, we found these to be some of the warmest and most comfortable off-the-shelf insole options for ski boots.
