After a long and fruitful ski season, one of Colorado's final open ski resorts has finally announced its closing day for 2024/25. Winter Park's sister mountain, Mary Jane, announced Friday that it will stop spinning lifts for the year on Sunday, May 18.

The Winter Park side of the resort's final day of operation was April 26, but the Mary Jane half was committed to staying open as long as conditions permitted and had a TBD closing day.

Since then, skiers have been able to enjoy slushy spring bump laps on Mary Jane's famous mogul terrain as well as a couple of sneaky May pow days in the last week. The resort will host their final party of the spring at Jane Beach on May 17 before lifts stop spinning the following day.

Winter Park and Mary Jane have seen 368 inches of total snowfall this season, which is about 40 inches above their average total.

A late-season storm dropped several inches on ski areas around Colorado last week, including 8 inches on Mary Jane, helping to keep the ski area open another couple of weeks. Following Mary Jane's closing day next weekend, Arapahoe Basin will be the only ski area still open in Colorado for the season, and it still has a TBD closing date.

Winter Park recently made headlines as Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed a historic new lease with the Union Pacific Railroad that allows train access through the Moffat Tunnel, just outside Winter Park.

Colorado's existing Mountain Rail service has allowed skiers to take a train from Denver's Union Station to Winter Park to avoid I-70 skier traffic and take advantage of the railway.

Over the 2024/25 season, the Winter Park Ski Train saw a 153 percent increase in usage over the previous season. With the new lease, the railway will be extended so that passengers can take the train from Denver all the way to Steamboat Springs, which is another 100 miles northwest on Highway 40.

Eventually, the railway hopes to have stations and stops along Highway 40 in key towns such as Hot Sulphur Springs, Kremmling, Craig, and Hayden, unlocking a new transportation passage for northwest Colorado.
