Last winter, 15-year-old Jasper Rogers got a golden opportunity to ski and film with his mentor Ben Richards at Eagle Pass Heli, a backcountry skiing operation near Revelstoke, British Columbia.

Richards, known for his performances on the Freeride World Tour—he placed 5th overall this past season—can put on a powder skiing clinic. But so can Rogers.

Together, the two skiers sampled some of British Columbia’s finest blower in Don’t Quote Me, a recent release from Hunt Cinema.

Given the time of year, the short film provides a much-needed break from the summer heat. Hopefully, in a few short months, we’ll all be skiing similarly deep snow, minus the cliffs and the backflips, of course. That’s probably best left to the experts.

It’s easy to see why Rogers caught Richards’ attention. In Don’t Quote Me, Rogers stays composed in the mountains, even as an avalanche cleaves the snow away below him. It doesn’t hurt that the young skier’s social media presence also contains a buffet of cliff drops and backflips (give him a follow, if you have a minute).

Towards the end of last season, Rogers competed in the Silver Belt—a new freeride competition at Sugar Bowl, California—and dropped more than a few hammers, including an enormous double off a cliff.

The future of freeride skiing looks as good as ever, with the level of competition on the Freeride World Tour increasing at a breakneck pace as standout up-and-comers like Astrid Cheylus, Marcus Goguen, and Richards bring freestyle flavor to the big mountains.

Cork 720s are becoming more commonplace at freeride’s highest level. So are fast, fluid, and technical runs that include plenty of tricks. A winning Freeride World Tour line from a decade ago might not even crack the top five today.

Meanwhile, the next generation, which includes Jasper Rogers, is already getting ready to blow minds. If you aren’t already paying attention to the groms like him, you should be—it’s only going to get gnarlier from here.
