It seems that the driest winters always have the wettest springs. It's like Ullr just happened to be running behind schedule and has been waiting until ski areas are closing up for the season to drop a couple feet of snow.
While many mountains are closed for the season already, a select few are hanging onto their last bit of snow, and a few are about to get hit by a storm cycle that could result in good ski conditions. What's the saying again? April pow days bring May....?
According to our friends at Powderchasers, a storm system is moving into the Sierras this week. Starting Tuesday, April 21, several California resorts could score through the end of the week before the storm moves inland.
Here are the ski areas that are still open and forecasted to get snow this week. Everyone else... break out your pin bindings and skins, winter's not over yet!
Snow forecast through April 24, 2026: 9-13 inches
Palisades Tahoe is still spinning lifts thanks to a couple of late-season storms over the past month. The ski area often tries to stay open until Memorial Day, and while they haven't said otherwise yet, the end of May might still be a stretch.
Luckily, this incoming storm is forecasted to drop between 9 and 13 inches of snow on the Tahoe area. Palisades is one of the few ski areas still open, and while the storm seems to hit hardest on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 22, colder temps through the end of the week could help some of that snow stick around.
Snow forecast through April 24, 2026: 8-12+ inches
Another California ski area with a notoriously long season, Mammoth Mountain is still open and planning to spin lifts until Memorial Day, as of now.
Lucky for them, there's upwards of 12 inches of snow forecasted to fall between Tuesday and Wednesday in the Sierra. More snow could come to Mammoth starting Friday evening, with an inch or two here and there forecasted every day until Tuesday, April 28th.
Snow forecast through April 24, 2026: 13-20 inches
As the storm moves east, forecasts show that Big Sky Montana could benefit significantly right before they re-open for their final spring weekend of operations.
Starting Wednesday evening, April 22, Big Sky is forecasted to get 3-5" with another 13" falling between Thursday and Friday.
Big Sky has been closed on weekdays since April 13 and reopening for weekends, which means their snowpack has gotten a little mid-week break. This storm should make for a great closing weekend at Big Sky, as will the final show in their spring concert series.
Snow forecast through April 24, 2026: 10 inches
Utah's Snowbird resort is still spinning lifts and should be getting a little refresh at the end of this week. Following temperatures in the high-40s on Monday, things should cool down starting Tuesday night.
3-8" of snow is forecasted for Wednesday, with another 1-3" possible on Thursday. More trace snowfall and continued cold temperatures are forecasted for through the weekend at Snowbird and into next week.
The ski area shifted to spring operations starting on Monday, April 20th, with the following lifts operating from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. for the remainder of the season: Tram, Little Cloud, Peruvian (Friday-Saturday), Peruvian Tunnel (Friday-Saturday), and Mineral Basin operating 8 a.m. to-1 p.m.
Snow forecast through April 24, 2026: 10 inches
Alta has one more week in the season, with a closing date of April 26. Like Snowbird, temperatures at Alta are quite warm on Monday, but are expected to drop through the week.
This last week is shaping up to be a good one in Little Cottonwood, with 8" of snow forecast for Wednesday through Friday, and another 5" possible before the closing day of their 88th season. Despite an unusual winter, Alta is one of the few places that hit the 300" mark, so enjoy the last week of turns there while you can.
Snow forecast through April 24, 2026: 10 inches
Big Cottonwood should benefit from this incoming storm as well and Brighton is still spinning lifts as part of their 'Meltdown' spring season.
Monday is looking even warmer at Brighton, with a high in the low 50s, but things should cool down on Wednesday, with 2-4" of snow in the forecast. Between Wednesday and Friday morning, Brighton could see 8" of snow.
Operations on the Crest 6 lift should run from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. until May 3, giving Brighton riders a little more time to enjoy this new snow incoming.
